Fluffy corgis, a surprise in our litter
Gdansk
The litter that just arrived at the Numenor Valar cattery includes the puppies you often ask about: a fluffy corgi , or Pembroke Welsh Corgi with a long, fluffy coat. It's still the same dog, just a bit fluffier.
What is a fluffy corgi?
Fluffy is a typical Pembroke Corgi who inherited long hair from his parents. A recessive mutation of the FGF5 gene is responsible for his appearance. A puppy can only be born fluffy if both parents carry this gene , even if they themselves look completely normal. Therefore, a litter of short-haired parents sometimes has fluff. This isn't the result of crossbreeding or any "design"; it's simply genetics that have always been present in this breed.
What makes them different?
Coat: soft, longer hair, distinct fringes on the ears, a feather on the tail, "pants" on the hind legs and a lush ruff on the chest.
Personality: the same as every Pembroke: intelligent, alert, full of energy, attached to people and always ready to work (and eat).
Grooming: They need a little more brushing, especially behind the ears and on the "pants", but this is nothing beyond the capabilities of the average owner.
Health: Long coat alone is not a health defect. A dog's health depends on the health of its parents and proper breeding, not on the length of its coat.
What about exhibitions?
The FCI breed standard describes the Pembroke's coat as medium length, straight, and with a dense undercoat. Long hair is an exception, so fluffy Corgis are not intended for a show career. Outside the ring, there are no limitations: fluffy Corgis excel as family dogs, in sports, and in training, such as rally-o or agility. Why are we happy about this?
We breed corgis primarily for their health and temperament, with appearance being a bonus. These fluffy puppies are a pleasant surprise and proof that everything in our lines is working as it should. They are just as planned, nurtured, and loved as the rest of the litter.
