Fluffy corgi: the long-coated Pembroke
Longer coat, fringed ears and a feathered tail. Where fluffy corgis come from, how they differ from the rest of the litter, and how to look after them.

Our first litter, born on 2 September 2026, included puppies with a long, soft coat. Breed enthusiasts call them fluffies. We have had plenty of questions about them since, so here are the answers in one place.
Where the fluffy coat comes from
The long coat comes from a recessive variant of the FGF5 gene. A puppy is fluffy when it inherits that variant from both parents. The parents themselves can have a standard coat and simply be carriers, which is why a fluffy can turn up in a litter from two short-coated dogs. The variant has been in the breed for generations.
How a fluffy differs from the rest of the litter
Looks: a soft, longer coat, fringed ears, “trousers” on the hind legs, a full ruff on the chest and a feathered tail. The difference shows in a puppy only a few weeks old, first on the ears.
Temperament: the same as any Pembroke’s: quick, alert, devoted to people and always ready to work (and to eat).
Health: the long coat has no effect on health. A fluffy is as healthy as a Pembroke with a standard coat.
Grooming
A fluffy needs brushing two or three times a week, especially behind the ears, on the trousers and on the ruff, where mats form most easily. The long coat also picks up more mud and leaves on an autumn walk. It sheds just like a short-coated corgi, only in bigger tufts. At most we trim the hair between the paw pads, because the double coat protects the dog from cold and from sun.
Shows and sport
The FCI breed standard describes the Pembroke’s coat as medium length, straight, with a dense undercoat. A long coat departs from the standard, so fluffies go to their homes as family dogs. In training they do just as well as the rest of the breed: agility, rally-o, nosework, long hikes.
